BOSTON COMMON PENTHOUSE RENOVATION

This large top floor apartment in a Downtown mid-rise building counts chief among its virtues a 60’ long panoramic view of Boston Common, the State House and Back Bay. Then, if that weren’t enough, a dramatic rear window-scape looks out onto the lights of Boston’s newly re-energized theater district. Renovating the space called for reorganizing the floor plan to better capture light and views, while also rationalizing circulation. The result is a logical sequence of interior spaces, connected by circulation space that doubles as storage and art display. The new work also added two fireplaces, modernized the bathrooms, and replaced the existing kitchen. Relief was brought to the building’s low ceilings with the integration of trays ceilings that correspond to room function and furniture placement, while also giving a dramatic lighting effect.  The house was finished with sophisticated brown oak flooring, a flecked grey schist stone for fireplaces, rift-sawn walnut for fully paneled walls and concealed doors, and sumptuous matte travertine tile to show off clean white fittings in the master bath.
